Going a Little Mental
I'm a very big movie buff, but I am no critic. I watch tons of movies of all different genres ranging from chick flicks like Mean Girls to Sundance Films such as Martha Marcy Mae Marlene and Memento. I always hate when somebody asks me what my favorite film is because I have so many that I couldn't rank over others. I'm one of those psychos who categorizes favorites to justify that each of my favorites is accounted for.
Now one of my favorites would have to be It's Kind of a Funny Story. Not only is it an indie movie (which is my favorite genre) but it is also a novel. I have to admit thought that the movie was far better than the book, but my opinion may be skewed because I saw the movie first. The movie is basically a coming of age story which I feel that I can personally relate to in small ways. Not to mention there is an Under Pressure
Craig, a highschooler in a pretentious New York public school, finds himself being vacuum sealed by the dramatics of his life (even though he has nothing to actually complain about). He finds himself thinking of death but checks himself into a mental ward before he can actually do anything serious. While he's there he finds himself making friends with some unlikely characters and sort of awkwardly falling in love with one of the teens there.
I think the variation of characters is what makes the movie so good. The characters include Bobby his new found best friend who is in his 30's who tired to kill himself, Muntada an Egyptian man who hasn't left his room in weeks, Solomon a man who was in some jewish underground acid group, and his love interest Noell who cuts her arms and has a very distinct self inflicted scar on her face. I really like how Craig sort of gets what he was looking for which was basically he didn't have it so bad. There are just so many quirks about this movie and the characters that make me love this movie!
