The other day, my mom eagerly ran up to my room totally excited about the news of the new Watchmen/Minutemen prequel coming out (or that came out..not really keeping a clos watch on that). She was super stoked until I told her that it was a comic book that was being relased, not another movie (I wish). As if none of you have noticed, I'm a pretty big comic/superhero movie enthusiast and somewhat of a poser since the only comic's I've read were Archie when I was 10. Nonetheless I am a very big fan of the film Watchmen, I mean obviously I made an illustration of it's two main(ish) characters; Night Owl and Silk Spectre
I've wanted to do a Watchmen illustration for awhile. Two of my friends and my mother...requested that I do a Wathchmen themed drawing. After being suggested it, I broke down and watched the film again and the next day began furiously sketching. So here we are with yet another movie superhero themed illustration, in
which the characters are floating in air with no setting of place or
time. I decided with all of the effort I spent in making Night Owl not
look like Gumby, I would wait until my next illustration to add a
background to my illustrations.
Now the film has to be one of my all time favorites for so many reasons. The first reason, is that I am absolutely in love with the montage in the beginning of the movie. I love how they uniquely show how superhero's were part of every day culture and basically how their glory days slowly turned into shit storm with many of the heroes either being killed or having to adjust to everyday life. The song they featured in this scene "The Times, They Are A-Changin" brought the decades together quite eloquently.
The second reason I love this movie is because of how they showcased the lives of each of the hero's almost equally. Rorschach was my favorite character through out the entire movie because of his witty remarks (I can relate..) and how they showed his back story. The part of the movie when he's in jail, and shows all of this inmates that a 5 foot ginger can basically soak you in grease and make you beg for mercy, was my favorite part. I thought his line "None of you seem to understand. I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with *ME*!
" has to be one of the greatest lines of all time.
The and final reason I'm going to write about is the choice of music. I already expressed how I really loved the placement of the Bob Dylan song in the montage, but there were also so many great "musical moments" in this movie. In the beginning of the movie when The Comedian is getting the ass kicking of a life time, the song in the background is a classic song by Nat King Cole "Unforgettable". I have to say, I love when movies decide to have a very high pressured fight scene with slow sultry music in the background. This just reminded me of the bar scene in "A Bronx Tale.". I also liked the song selection when they were at the funeral and the Simon and Garfunkel song "The Sound of Silence" was playing. During this movie is the first time I had ever heard it, but it left a lasting impression on me because I liked the melody and found myself singing the little bit I knew from the movie daily. Lastly, but not least, the scene when Dan goes to dinner with Laurie. In the beginning of this scene, they play the song "99 luftballoons" by Nena. Ever since I was a very small girl (well..young..since I'm still only 5'2) I was obsessed with this song. They would always feature this song on bad 80's countdowns I used to watch with my mother. I really loved how they also used the German version rather than the English "99 red Balloons" version."
So that's my peace on the whole Watchmen movie. I hope you read it or at least pretended to read it, and If you've never seen the film before I hope this urges you to go out and rent it! Or just do yourself the favor and buy it! As you can see I got a little carried away, seeing that I have nothing to do on a Wednesday night.
